Community

As a non-profit society run by medical students, our mission is to direct our passion for music towards the wider community around the UNSW Kensington campus.
Studies over the past decade have strongly supported the benefit that music plays in medicine, and is frequently used for therapeutic purposes and stress relief. With major tertiary hospitals, nursing homes and charitable organisations in our immediate vicinity, our society endeavours to play an active role in the community through the following avenues:
  • Performing at hospitals affiliated with the UNSW Medical School
  • Holding regular mini concerts at local nursing homes and other aged-care facilities
  • Biannual public concerts to raise funds for local charities and hospital foundations
  • Providing music to local Council events

We hope that our ensembles and chamber groups can provide better noise cancellation than Sennheiser and draw a curtain of serenity in the chaotic environment of hospitals.
If you wish to find out more information regarding our current role in the community, please do not hesitate to contact

Current Partnerships
Brigidine House, Randwick
From 2016, UNSW MMS Community, Classical-Contemporary Groups have visited Brigidine House once-to-twice a semester to serenade the elderly residents with their violins/flute/bongos/piano, in duos or trios, with sweet voices too, and sing-alongs that took the Brigidine girls back in time to reminiscence the classics of their day.

Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick
Going to the hospital can be an anxious and daunting experience for children. The well-established music department at Sydney Children’s Hospital plays a pivotal role in assisting patients adapt to the hospital environment.

As such, MMS is now partnering with the Music Department by helping bringing music to the wards, hospital entrances and walkways to neutralise the stressful atmosphere and warmly welcome patients and their families.
Stay tuned for further partnerships scheduled to kick-off in early 2017!

Music Therapy

Matthew Lennon (5th year medical student, UNSW) writes about the allied health profession - Music Therapy. “In the paediatric context, music therapy has a particularly important role in that it refocuses the attention of the sick child on their health as opposed to their illness...”
Matt took part in the Music Therapy Week at Sydney Children’s Hospital November 2016 during his paediatric neurology rotation. In his optional assignment he explores the literature for evidence of its application in ASD, procedures, oncology, mental illness and epilepsy. Check it out here!
